Our friends at Peconic Baykeeper are asking the government to start by tackling the biggest and dirtiest septic systems on Long Island. When presented with Peconic Baykeeper's page petition in September, the NYSDEC came back six months later with a half-page note asking for more information on the 1, sites. Given the scale of the problem, we need a much greater sense of urgency if we are to save Long Island.
This is a great beach area and justifiably can get busy; a search of the internet will throw references to both topless and full nudity in certain areas. The current situation is that the genitals must be covered i. However, New York law allows topless sunbathing so that is OK on any of the beaches and as long as you are wearing even the skimpiest of g-strings etc you are good to go on any of the Fire Island beaches.
After the season, they are perfect for jogging, biking, beach yoga, or quiet hours of fishing off the pier. The park has been established to protect the magnificent coastal landscape of Sandy Hook Bay, with miles of sandy beaches, coastal shrublands, salt marshes, tidal creeks, and massive dunes as well as wonderful views of the Manhattan skyline across the bay. There is a fishing pier always full of hopeful fishermen and a number of picnic areas scattered throughout the park.

AS the blue-gray waves roll in, curl and break, thousands of delighted bathers frolic in the frothy white surf. The beach of sugar-fine sand is the backdrop to the giant mosaic of brightly colored swimsuits, towels, umbrellas and chairs and human skin ranging across every racial hue and gradation of tan. It is another blissful day at Jones Beach.

Only two bridges lead to Fire Island and the national seashore and there are no public roads within the seashore itself.
